Acting in a non-profit capacity, Thandiwe Eaton is dedicated to the advancement of public health in Malawi. Focusing on the pressing issue of dementia care and awareness, she seeks to bridge a significant knowledge gap by providing education to family members responsible for the care of dementia patients. This initiative was born out of a profound realization that such essential education is currently lacking in Malawi.
In April 2023, she embarked on a self-funded journey to Malawi, where she was confronted with the startling reality that even many healthcare professionals, including nurses, lack a fundamental understanding of dementia and its management. This knowledge deficit has led to the unfortunate discharge of dementia patients from hospitals, often attributed to superstitious beliefs, such as the misconception that hallucinations are linked to being "witches."
Recognizing the need for comprehensive dementia education and awareness, Thandiwe believes that her cause can extend its reach beyond family caregivers to include healthcare professionals. By doing so, she aspires to raise awareness among a broader population and address the critical issue of dementia care in Malawi.
Moreover, Thandiwe has identified the presence of socioeconomic factors that pose significant risks to certain segments of the population in Malawi. These factors have contributed to health disparities, affecting the well-being of the community adversely.
Inspired by the journey of her mother, who suffers from dementia, and through her unwavering commitment to social justice, Thandiwe aims to effect meaningful change and make a substantial difference in the lives of the underserved population in Malawi. Her primary objective is to promote equitable access to education and resources, ultimately improving the community's overall health and well-being.
